Valentin perfers to perform traditional songs in their original style and deliver their message with intended impact. Along the way he contributes to conserving his cultural history. Blackthorn Sticks ( Guy Drollinger) - Although everyone else in his family played, Granddad Charlie on fiddle, and his father Lyle on the trumpet, Guy didn't start until he was 12 and got his first guitar. He attempted the violin, but nothing really took until he saw John Hartford play in 1976. That, plus backing up his grandfather on the guitar for a performance around the same time made Guy realize just how much he liked the fiddle. In 1996, Guy and his daughter Hannah represented the State of Iowa at the Smithsonian Festival of Amerian Folklife in Washington, D.C. and at the Sesquicentennial Festival of Iowa Folklife in Des Moines. In 2002 and 2004 Guy was named Master Fiddler of the Iowa Arts Council Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. He has performed locally, nationally, and even internationally.
